iPhone 12 series is finally announced. Apple has finally unveiled all their iPhones that were in rumours for last few months and trust me Apple has done a great job altogether but I can’t stop myself asking Apple why they ignored certain sections like refresh rate of the so-called Super Retina XDR display and the primitive notch over the display, perhaps the matter of refresh rate got buried under the weight of the name of the display itself.
Well, there are few other sections where Apple just excelled and put themselves and iPhones way ahead of the competitors in the smartphone market. Few features with which people may fall in love are its super sleek design, super-powerful A14 Bionic chip and support for Dolby Vision® in real-time along with a couple of other innovations.
Apple launched four iPhones this year, iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. We have compiled all the features and highlights of the latest iPhone 12 and all its versions come with, along with brief discussions focusing on if the features are meaningful for people in real life or not.

iPhone 12: Overview of new innovations this year
There are a handful of new innovations in all the iPhone 12 models which at the same price as that of iPhone 11 makes much more value and sense to the purchase. Let us have a brief overview of all the features and functionalities iPhone 12 is set to come with.
1. 5G Connectivity
5G has become the industry standard now in 2020 for network and connectivity if we concern about some serious flagship handheld devices. 2020 has seen an inflated network usage and demand and the reason obviously is the COVID scenario which ha locked people into their homes.
Now, Apple has moved to 5G network as expected for better connectivity and to make use of their A14 Bionic chip to its best. There are a few more customizations from Apple which makes 5G function even smoother than other devices in competition and they are:

2. Design is Attractive and Handy
Apple has pushed the limits with the design of their new iPhone 12. The design is gorgeous with the vintage touch of their flat rectangular design with smooth flat edges. The design feels much more handy and premium providing a better grip and stability. The aluminium frame along with the glass covers the whole iPhone and gives a pleasant touch.
The design has not only appealed to the visuals of the new iPhone 12 but also made the device 11% thinner, 15% smaller in volume and 16% lighter than the last year’s iPhone 11. This year, iPhone 12 comes with 5 awesome colours namely black, white, red, green and blue.
Pro versions of the iPhone 12 series i.e. iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max come with four colour shades which are black, white, golden and blue. To balance the design Apple has taken care of the durability too, the whole iPhone 12 series comes with an IP68 rating for liquid splash or spill resistance with a maximum depth of around 6 meters up to 30 minutes.
iPhones always came with spectacular displays meant to satisfy the users. This year with the iPhone 12 comes their 6.1-inch customized OLED panel which they call the Super Retina XDR display. Although they display quality is overwhelming when we talk about its colour reproduction, deep blacks and intuitive visual experience.
The inclusion of an OLED panel makes much more sense in such a flagship device in 2020 because they are better on every note. In OLED panels each pixel can be controlled separately as they have their own light which makes them much more energy-efficient as only the pixels in use are lighted up which also helps produce true blacks and real dark mode. There are a few more features that you may love in Apple’s customized OLED panel:
- 2 times more pixels than the display in iPhone 11.
- Upto 1200 nits of maximum brightness.
- 2.8 million pixels produce brilliant quality.
- 460 ppi display over last year’s 326 ppi display in iPhone 11.
- 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
- Support for HDR, Dolby Vision® and HLG.
Now, the display altogether is spectacular in all terms but it lacks the 120Hz refresh rate which is one of the major attractions for the iPad Pro models. It would have been even more valuable if Apple could have included this prime feature.
Almost all flagships in the smartphone industry in 2020 have moved to a higher refresh rate display for the fluent experience but. Apple kind of ignored this in their latest iPhone 12 and its pro versions.
4. A14 Bionic Chip
Apple’s latest Bionic chipsets are my personal favourite releases. Apple has developed truly innovated technologies for its Bionic chipsets. Very soon, we are going to see Apple Silicon in their MacBooks too. Talking about the latest A14 chipset, I can only say that it’s just superb!
A13 Bionic chip was still the fastest smartphone chipset ever until the launch of Apple’s A14 Bionic chipset which is said to be shocking 50% faster than any other fastest smartphone chipset. Apple really keeps itself generations ahead by continuously competing with itself.
The latest A14 Bionic chipset comes with some awesome technologies not only in the scenarios of raw CPU power but also with their GPU, Neural engine and Image processor. Let us have a look over the highlighted features:
- 5nm process technology.
- Energy efficiency along with elevated performance.
- 11.8 billion transistors which are 40% more than that in A13 Bionic chip.
- 50% faster graphics with a 4-core GPU, gaming is meant to get real with such power.
- 16-core Neural engine, which makes it 80% faster on machine learning computations. It is capable of handling 11 trillion operations per second.
- CPU ML accelerators are up to 70% faster with A14 Bionic which makes machine learning a breeze on iPhones now.
5. Camera and Photography
iPhones have always set the standard for smartphone photography and this year too they have come up with excellent optimizations and quality enhancements over the previous generation technologies which were already very precise.
iPhone 12 comes with a dual-camera setup which produces excellent images even in low light conditions. The technology of the 7 element lens makes it easier for the camera in iPhone 12 to capture fine details even more precisely scoring a whopping 27% improvement in low-light photography.
Apple has particularly focused on computational photography which is the name they gave to their image processing technology. With the inclusion of smart HDR 3 and night mode for all the cameras including the front true depth camera in all the iPhone 12 versions, Apple has really taken a serious step in smartphone photography.
Recording videos on iPhones are much easier and beautiful with the latest night mode time-lapse features which not only improve the video quality even in low light but also provide the true colour stability in highest preset i.e. 4K at 60 FPS. The implementation of sensor-shift in the Pro versions of iPhone 12 has produced remarkable results and an exceptional optical stabilisation.
6. Apple ProRaw
With a large focus on computational photography, this year Apple took the smartphone photography by storm. The A14 Bionic chip is the only chipset that could have supported the whole image processing framework so well.
Apple ProRaw technology primarily focused on providing a full-fledged professional photography kit within the iPhone. It helps capture and save the raw image data by multi-frame image processing in real-time for which in turn can be utilized by any third-part image editing software to create professional-quality photographs out of iPhones. Apple is also planning to launch its API to be utilized by developers for better eco-system.
Pro versions have inherited some extra special features in the camera and videography section. It is the first-ever smartphone to record videos in Dolby Vision® HDR3 all along at 4K up to 60 FPS. Not only the support of 10-bit HDR recording but it also supports 60 times more colours than ever before. The power of A14 Bionic chipset allows you to edit HDR videos within the Photos app and share it with the speed of 5G. This is a complete package for media content creators on the go.
LiDAR is yet another major attraction of the iPhone 12 launch event. The raw power of the A14 Bionic chip paired with the new 16 core neural engine and 4 core GPU has really given iPhone 12 series the wings to fly.
The LiDAR basically stands for Light Detection and Ranging. The LiDAR technology is limited to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. The LiDAR technology works by emitting pulsed light waves into the surrounding environment which when returns back to the sensor after bouncing off the surface of the nearby objects the then the image processing module calculates the distances of the objects based on the timings of the waves received and hence prepares a computational image of the surrounding even with no lighting needed. LiDAR can prove itself important, particularly for AI modelling and visualizations.
8. MagSafe is Back but on iPhones
Apple has taken a step further in improving their wireless charging mechanism with the MagSafe charging feature. This is very similar to the MagSafe connector which used to come with the MacBooks before the redesign in 2018. Only things that differentiate the two technologies are their interface and way of implementation.
With iPhone 12, MagSafe connectors have made wireless charging much easier and safer. Apple has included various sensors and protection within the MagSafe connector to make it safe and durable. With the implementation of the new MagSafe charging solution in iPhones, Apple announced range of accessories for iPhone 12 including the MagSafe cases, foldable and dual charging accessories for iPhone and Apple watches and also indicated towards the upcoming car mount and multi-charger dock for MagSafe.
9. Ceramic Shield
The ceramic shield has become the new standard in the glass protection category recently with the launch of iPhone 12. Apple used the ceramic shield on their latest iPhone series which they claim as the toughest smartphone glass.
The ceramic shield is basically made of embedding nano-ceramic crystals on glass matrix, which makes it highly transparent and equally tough. The ceramic shield is designed by Corning and it is the world’s first colour-free and transparent glass-ceramic material which can offer excellent durability to devices implementing displays.
Apple claims that the ceramic shield provides tougher protection to iPhones than any other smartphones in the market. Also, iPhones are being marketed as having 4 times better drop performance and less likely to break. The ceramic shield is definitely a very interesting implementation by Apple.
10. Carbon Neutral Firm: Removed the Charger
Apple is pushing itself towards being a complete carbon neutral chain with all Apple retails, offices and data centres running on 100% renewable energy. Apple has its own roadmap for being a firm with net-zero climate impact by 2030. It is a noble move by Apple considering the importance of nature in this era.
Apple has implemented all possible methods for reducing the e-waste. From recycled aluminium to arsenic-free glasses, Apple uses them all to save the mother nature. But this year they took it to a whole new level by removing the Earpods and charger from the box which reduces the size.
Apple expects that by now you already have a power adaptor with you, the better part is that Apple has not made a hard transition and provides a USB C® to Lightning cable within the box which is compatible with any of the adaptors you have. Well if you want a brand new charging adapter from Apple, they are still selling it separately. It can also be interpreted as the trick which made Apple keep the prices same for the whole iPhone 12 series.

Apple actively supports the iPhones launched after the iPhone XR with iPhone 8 being replaced by the iPhone SE. If we name out all the iPhones you can look for this year with the assurance of Apple support then they are:

iPhone 12 and other models are all set to run down into the market within a few weeks.
